Book 3 builds upon the substantial foundations provided by So you really want to learn Maths Books 1 and 2. It provides more than sufficient examples and exercises to stretch and inspire potential scholars.

It is great to have a book that contains the syllabus that is required to extend the able at Common Entrance and to use towards scholarship. It continues to be clearly laid out. All in all it is a great asset to school teachers to have lots of examples relevant to their syllabus all in one book.

What a splendid new book it is that you are about to publish. I particularly like the way in which Serena has bought the hostroy of mathematics into much of the work, and the excellent activities at the end of each chapter. Just the thing to enthuse our more able mathematicians and give them a solid foundation for scholarship work.

These books provide a thorough grounding in maths. Detailed explanations are given through graded exercises, practical work, investigations and puzzles. The material is neatly laid-out, well organised with clear instructions and excellent diagrams, and very informative. The author even brings in fascinating snippets of history throughout the books: how the Egyptians wrote fractions, the history of the penny and of percentages, the origin of imperial units and much more. For instance, did you know that it was the Greeks who established the 'foot' as their basic unit of length and that, according to legend, this Greek unit was based on the measurement of Hercules' foot?
I am very impressed by the quality of material, which is very substantial both in content... and in weight (these books are heavy!) and would definately recommend them as a complete course.

The first two books in this series by Serena Alexander have proved enormously successful, with many schools adopting the series as the principal textbooks used to prepare for Common Entrance exams at 11 and 13 plus. The value of having a textbook written by a prep school teacher, familiar with the syllabus and the format of the Common Entrance exam is doubtless already clear to all users of this series. This third book follows the successful format of the previous two but the material is extended to cover the topics required for Papers 2 and 4 as well as the scholarship material required by the vast majority of senior schools.
There is no doubt that users of this series will find Book 3 every bit as useful as the earlier books and for those of you who have yet to discover the value of this series, I think that you’ll find it most worthwhile to investigate further.
