Stephen Greenhalgh, review on Amazon.co.uk - 9 Jul 2008
***** Well I never did but I wish I'd had this guide. It is well presented and concise. The guide brings a number of techniques and ideas together in an interesting way. Ideal for the reluctant student but also useful for any parent who wants to encourage their child.

Home Education Advisory Service Bulletin, February 2008 - 13 Mar 2008
Full of very useful information without being too heavy... a very accessible and enjoyable approach which would encourage children to learn.

David Shepherd, Special magazine - 4 Feb 2008
The book provides a helpful basic structure enabling children to locate themselves within the extremely complex fields of memory, brain function and perception.

Bernadette McLean, Principal, Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre - 4 Oct 2007
In a market already overflowing with study skills books, yet another arrival needs to have a unique selling point to survive. Study Skills: The Complete guide to Smart Learning by Elizabeth Holtom certainly has several. Its attractive format from its front cover to the illustrations and graphics throughout make it pleasurable to read. Written for pupils at key Stage 3, the book is designed so that pupils can use it independently or with the support of parents or teachers. The book or sections of it could also be used with older and younger children. The style of the book is engaging and informative. Pupils can learn about their brains and they are encouraged from the first page to interact with the exercises spread through the book. I promise boxes invite individual responses from the reader so that smart learning strategies are put into practice. From learning about how the brain works, readers can go on to understand how to look after their brains in order to increase effectiveness. Brains are individual so readers can discover whether their preference is for right or left brain learning and which of their senses are dominant in their learning, visual, auditory or kinaesthetic. These metacognitive exercises encourage pupils to reflect on their learning and bring their strategies into their conscious awareness, thus giving them more control over how they work. The book provides sections on motivation and organisation both essential first steps in any learning. Memory techniques are presented in a practical way as well as a multitude of ways to learn and revise actively. Material from across the curriculum is used so a range of contexts are offered for students to work with. Elizabeth Holtom is well qualified to write this book. She draws on her years as a practitioner of study skills. She knows what works and what doesn't and her voice of authority rings through the book. I shall be recommending this book to anxious parents who I know will find it invaluable. They will also appreciate that it is not overlong and very reasonably priced. It is also an excellent introduction to study skills for both specialist and classroom teachers.

Colin Rose, Accelerated Learning - 2 Aug 2007
Elizabeth has created a wealth of snappy practical advice to help students become better learners - and more motivated. The skills they'll learn will last them a lifetime.

Dr Lindy Bates, Head of Learning Support, Marlbourgh House School - 25 Jul 2007
...this book should be used by every student who wants to make learning easier and read by every teacher and parent who wants to help their children succeed.

Michael Roulston, Headmaster, Cranleigh Prep School - 12 Jul 2007
A triumph! Well done. I love the openess of the layout - it feels really accessible and it's so informally informative!
