I taught three boys Latin, one hour a week in their spare time and they all won scholarships this summer, two to King’s Canterbury, one to Tonbridge. We used this text book and I am prepared to tell anyone that it’s the best text book I’ve ever used in my entire career.

Started learning - re-learning - Latin to keep my OAP brain active. What an excellent introduction to the Latin language - a superb structured approach which is bound to achieve good results. Looking forward to finishing Book 1 and going on to Books 2 and 3. Many thanks, Mr Oulton. I wish I had these books fifty years ago!

I studied Latin to 'O' Level many years ago; and wasted my time and the opportunity to explore a vibrant language and culture. As I have aged, my interests increasingly focus on classical civilizations. As a result I wanted to revise and re-learn Latin. A search engine suggested this book - and what a joy it has been. It offers an easy to follow and thoroughly enjoyable course that seems to be academically rigorous, but lively and vital, and not condesending. I thoroughly reommend it.

I read about this book in the Daily Telegraph when it was recommended by John Clare. My daughters are learning Latin at school and needed a book which explained all the grammar properly. This one is clear, easy to use, and highly entertaining. There are silly jokes to keep them on their toes and yet the book teaches more Latin than anything else I have found. Buy it!

Let me begin like this; this is not a book for the sqeamish or the faint-hearted. Mr Oulton takes you firmly by the hand and guides you through REAL GRAMMAR. Conjugations and declensions, well chosen vocabulary, and lots of exercises... But he does it with a supreme intelligence and a passion for his students. I learnt Latin as a 9-12 year old in the '60s, then abandoned it at secondary school for Russian (Cold War - so more relevant etc. etc.). I did well at Latin, but I wish we'd had this book then.
His methodology is 'old fashioned' in that he isn't afraid to teach grammar as - grammar... He's not afraid to make you work hard but he does so with compassion, and by God it works! But the way he introduces it, the hard graft, guides you through it is unique. I'd almost say inspired. If you can handle, indeed can love grammar and can appreciate how Latin works with it, indeed cannot be learned properly without it, this is the book for you. I would almost say, if you can't manage grammar in the way he teaches it, don't bother with Latin.
And I at least find his humour absolutely ace! Its the icing on the cake! Its just the right kind of 'sympathetically bracing' humour you need to lighten up Latin without spoiling it. He actually reminds me a bit of Anthony Andrews in the Rosemary and Thyme episode 'the Invisible Worm'...
We could do with more teachers like Nicholas Oulton...

This book is absolutely wonderful. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Being a student, it has taken me from an absolute beginner to being able to read and translate latin sentences. Everything it teaches you, is followed up by exercises on the opposite page to help to drill the information into your mind. These exercises range from translating Latin to English, English to Latin, learning new words and identifying english words which derive from Latin. Plus every chapter ends with a story about the history of the Roman empire. Allowing you to not only learn the language but to learn about Romulus and Remus too.
So come on buy the book and start learning you first conjugation with amo, aedifico and canto!

This book is outstanding for its clarity. I am using it to teach my nine-year old daughter Latin. Someone said it's not easy, but if you take it at a suitable pace (and make sure you understand the current section *before* going to the next) there's nothing too difficult about it. You must also get the answer book. Thoroughly recommended! Every school (whether they teach Latin or not) should just buy some copies and dish them out free.

I am home-educating my daughter and having tried several beginner's Latin books, I have found that she is actually learning from this one. It is traditionally based with emphasis on grammar and has plenty of exercises. I wish I had had this book when I did Latin.

My thirteen-year-old son is changing schools and will be learning Latin for the first time. I needed a crash course for him and haven't done Latin myself since 1974. This book was the answer. Clear, simple, concise, and packed with humour. I heartily recommend it. It has taught my son the basics quickly and painlessly, and been a brilliant refresher course for me. I am so impressed, I will be buying volumes two and three, and continuing to study this wonderful language to a higher level.
Try it - if you are a serious student of Latin, you won't be disappointed.

Thank you for clear, straightforward and above all succinct explanations. What I like about your style of explaining is that you assume both intelligence and a 'no nonsense' determination in your students, and you provide the same accordingly. Combine this with imagination and a very 'forthright' sense of humour, and you might almost be creating a new teaching style. It seems you are taking the best of the old (the generation who taught my generation) but with the intelligence and understanding of the modern.

The books are fantastic and clear to understand. They have really aroused a passion for the subject in me, and I can't wait to get to real poetry and prose. Well done for a brilliant set of books.

***** I bought this book to complement a few other beginner's books I'd already purchased. However, I quickly set the rest aside - this book is marvellous! The intricacies of Latin grammar are explained so well that the task of learning Latin is suddenly simplified beyond belief. The layout of the book is to introduce a few new points on each left hand page and then practise using them with several exceptionally well thought out exercises on the corresponding right hand page. If the exercises are all completed, the Latin will have been almost automatically programmed into your brain. Clever stuff. I would give this book 10 stars if they were available. I strongly recommend buying the accompanying book of answers so that you can check if the exercises are correctly answered. I am enjoying this book a lot - never thought I'd say that about learning Latin!

Have I mentioned how happy I am with Galore Park Latin? Because I am. Very happy. Really, really happy.

Have I mentioned how happy I am with Galore Park Latin? Because I am. Very happy. Really, really happy. It's as good as Latin Book One, only with better pacing and more practice. I'm so happy that I plunked down the cash for the higher-level Latin series, and the Spanish program. When I get more money, I will give it to them in return for science and British history materials!
