Bob Bass, Senior Master and Head of Classics at Orwell Park School, Ipswich, has been awarded an MBE for services to education in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

Bob taught at prep schools in Somerset, Kenya and Sussex before moving to Orwell Park in 1987. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Classics Teaching and on the Council of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers. For 12 years, he edited the SATIPS Classics Broadsheet, and for 20 years he was the IAPS Classics Subject Leader and then Adviser. He is the Chief Setter of ISEB’s Common Entrance and Common Academic Scholarship papers, proofreader for their Greek papers, and an IGCSE examiner. He has published more than 20 books targeted at young classicists.

‘The news of my MBE came totally out of the blue,’ said Bob. ‘I see it as a recognition of the importance of Latin, a challenging but rewarding language that gets young minds to think in a way no other subject does. It is thriving in the independent sector thanks to enlightened head teachers who recognise its value, the diversity of approaches made possible by a wide range of resources, and the dedication of teachers who believe in what they are doing.’

Bob is the author of many popular Galore Park titles including Latin Pocket Notes and Latin Vocabulary for Key Stage 3 and Common Entrance. Most recently, in 2015 we published his Latin for Common Entrance Exam Practice Questions range. In these books, Bob has written exam-style questions and model answers to allow pupils to practise for the 13+ ISEB Latin exams. They cover a huge range of questions including translation (both from English to Latin and Latin to English), grammar and vocabulary, and comprehension. His books are endorsed by ISEB and include a complete vocabulary list for the exams.

Bob was presented with his medal at Buckingham Palace by the Duke of Cambridge on 15th March. He was accompanied by his wife, Celia, and their children, James and Helen. ‘It was a magical, unforgettable day,’ said Bob, ‘meticulously organised but with a very cordial and relaxed atmosphere. We met lots of interesting people. Our daughter summed it up nicely when she said it was the sort of day that money can’t buy.’

Each year, members of the public are chosen to receive honours in recognition of exceptional contributions that they have made to their area of work. These are announced in either the New Year Honours List or the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, with around 25 ceremonies being held throughout the year.

The ceremonies are grand occasions, with music provided by a military band or orchestra. The Queen or member of the royal family, presents the award and must remain standing throughout, and the ceremony takes around an hour.

Galore Park would like to congratulate Bob on this fantastic achievement.
